SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION, KEY POINTS, CONCLUSIONS, ACTIONS: Internet-based information systems can help people learn about where specific social issues are concentrated, and about what organizations in a geographic area are currently involved in various causes. In Chicago the Tutor/Mentor? Connection models a use of GIS and information technology to help comprehensive, volunteer based tutor.mentor programs be in every poverty neighborhood. Using such an information base, leaders can market the information to increase the number of volunteers and/or donors who go through the information system to choose where to get involved, and how to get involved.
Visit http://www.tutormentorexchange.net to see this system in action. Visit the Tutor/Mentor? Institute at this web site and read power point essays that illustrate the use of a GIS and an interactive database to help connect those who can help with those who need help. Email tutormentor2@earthlink.net if you'd like to know more or find ways to collaborate with the Tutor/Mentor? Connection.
