I work as Chief of Staff and "Charitable Cheerleader" for the Nautilus Group, an initiative of New York Life, located in Dallas, TX, serving the clients of the company's top agents with estate, business, and charitable strategies. Nautilus has a staff of 38, including 14 JDs and 3 CPAs. The organization does about 2,000 cases a year with client's of median net worth of $10 mil+. Have spoken as a panelist on philanthropy at the National Convention of Council on Foundations, the National Committee on Planned Giving's Annual Conference, and at a conference organized by the International Management Research Institute. Serve as a volunteer for the Dallas Social Venture Partnership's Education Committee, and am past-President of the North TX Chapter of The National Comittee on Planned Giving. The Open Space Giving Conference is a volunteer project, and is not sponsored or endorsed in any way by my employer, New York Life. My personal hope is that those of us who work in philanthropy can help financially successful people be more generous and more effective in their giving, or "social investing." For those who do not have financial wealth, giving can mean volunteering, a life of service, or helping create a cultural commons through their artistic efforts. Our society's greatest "social capital" is not money at all, but the talents and ideals of good people from all walks of life who are willing to work together, or respectfully knock each other ideas around, for noble goals. I hope the conference and gifthub.org will help connect "givers," rich in spirit, to create a better and more inclusive society. We all work in our professional silos, or little "thought worlds." I have been to dozens of philanthropy conferences. And so often they are sterile. The conveners seem to assume that "giving" is all about wealth and professional services, particularly tax law. This conference, I hope, will be different since those with money and those without mingle as citizens in an atmosphere where what matters are ideas and ideals. Can't wait to meet the others who attend. http://www.gifthub.org |
