{"id":550,"date":"2005-12-29T14:41:07","date_gmt":"2005-12-29T19:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.michaelherman.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2005\/12\/29\/grassroots-and\/"},"modified":"2005-12-29T15:40:17","modified_gmt":"2005-12-29T20:40:17","slug":"30000-marriages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.michaelherman.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2005\/12\/29\/30000-marriages\/","title":{"rendered":"30,000 Marriages?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>as some email conversations and weblog reading progesses, i&#8217;m still rolling around a bit with this question:  what is grassroots?  <\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;m willing to accept the value of searching out and connecting <a href=\"http:\/\/project30000.blogspot.com\">30000 &#8220;grassroots&#8221; projects<\/a> for humanity.  i understand the whole range of comment on globalization and grassroots.  i understand, too, that so many dualities, so called patterns of opposition, need mending and marrying.  so the title of the overall project caused some confusion for me.  <\/p>\n<p>thinking about 30000 &#8220;good&#8221; projects leaves open the possiblity of defining good.  30000 marriages is more interesting yet.  thrilling to think of 30000 projects that marry one something with another something else that shouldn&#8217;t be able to fit with the first something.  i *think* this might be the thing that resolves some of the things in <a href=\"http:\/\/project30000.blogspot.com\/2005\/12\/this-long-section-shows-you-how-over.html\">this recent 30000 post<\/a>:  the marriage of former-president and citizen-activist, the marriage of world-futures and seven-year-olds, the marriage of global-brand-coke and renewable-energy.  <\/p>\n<p>it seems to me that the important practice to be established is one of finding pieces that common knowledge says can&#8217;t go together and then finding the uncommon wisdom that most definitely, practically and obviously does unite the two.  a practice of shocking ourselves with bits of a new world coming together, rather than with the foundations of an old world breaking down and apart.<\/p>\n<p>take this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/talk\/content\/articles\/051226ta_talk_mcgrath\">New Yorker<\/a> invitation via <a href=\"http:\/\/markdilley.blogspot.com\/2005_12_01_markdilley_archive.html#113580529387600879\">mark dilley<\/a>:  &#8220;&#8230;If you find the media\u2019s Iraq coverage unsatisfactory, pick up the phone. Don\u2019t call the Times, or CNN, or Rupert Murdoch; call Baghdad.
